** Howdy, I'm uploading a new version of this song soon! Stay tuned & follow me at whtvrrvr on Instagram for details <3 **
I wrote this song in 2014 after being involved in PrideCab, one of Buddies in Bad Times Queer Youth Programs. We had a week or two of learning about our queer histories. And at the time, I identified as a lesbian and the things I heard about the lesbian bar scene of the fifties and sixties really excited me. So I decided to write a song about it.

lyrics
December 1960
Dirty floors, foggy ceilings
All packed in with delinquents just like me.
And people doing their 9 to 5 AM in the streets.
I smell beer on her breath when she asks me to dance.
The smile in her eyes when I say yes.
I'm not supposed to want her.
She is beautiful in all the ways she shouldn't be
And here in this place she is dirty broken and free.
Bodies move to the sound of badly played guitar.
Everyone's a little less dancer, a little more silhouette
Young hearts knocking against our chests.
A tangle of arms, quiet relief
God we sure aren't safe, but here we are at peace.
We are beautiful in all the ways we shouldn't be
And here in this place we are dirty broken and free.
Sirens break our hearts in two, we run like mice through the red and blue
My body shakes and we all ache
Quiet souls that refuse to break.
I am beautiful but I shouldn't be,
And here alone I'm just unclean.
Beautifully played and full of moving vocal performances, the Bay Area singer/songwriter's latest is a stellar work of art. Bandcamp Album of the Day Feb 3, 2023
